Gancedo surprises once again at Madrid Design Festival

Every February, design takes over Madrid with a special energy. Galleries, studios and brands join a creative conversation that spreads across the city during the Madrid Design Festival, and Gancedo —with its emblematic showroom at Velázquez 38— once again becomes one of those places where it is worth pausing for a moment.

The brand, which has spent decades exploring the universe of textile interior design, opens its doors to two artistic installations that approach fabric from very different yet equally fascinating perspectives.

Under the idea of transformation and sensory experience, these proposals invite visitors to discover textiles beyond their decorative function: as origin, as energy and as a creative landscape.

Hilanderas: the magical moment when fabric is born

The first stop is “Hilanderas”, an installation created by Atelier MEL, a piece that works almost like a poetic homage to the origin of all textiles. Here, thread is not yet fabric, pattern or weave — it is pure possibility.

The work traces in the air a kind of constellation made of stretched threads forming catenaries — those natural curves that appear when a thread is suspended between two points — evoking the circular movement of traditional spinning wheels. The result is a light, enveloping structure that seems almost alive, slowly breathing within the space.

As visitors walk through it, they have the sensation of entering the moment just before a fabric is born — that almost invisible instant when material begins to organize itself before becoming warp and weft.

There is something deeply hypnotic about this installation: the threads create shadows, rhythms and tensions that change depending on the viewer’s perspective, reminding us that even the most fundamental gesture in the textile world — spinning — can contain a profoundly contemporary beauty. It is a delicate, almost silent work that connects traditional craftsmanship with a very current sculptural sensibility.

In Constant Movement: when embroidery becomes landscape

If Hilanderas speaks about origin, “In Constant Movement”, by multidisciplinary artist Koral Antolín, takes us into the territory of transformation. In this proposal, thread has already become volume, texture and narrative. Antolín creates a tactile universe through embroidery and techniques such as punch needle, building surfaces that appear to grow beyond the embroidery frame. Her pieces explore identity, life changes and the energy that moves through us, with symbolic references to motherhood and ancient Paleolithic Venus figures.

The result is a journey that feels almost organic: soft reliefs, forms that recall landscapes and colors that invite visitors to come closer and discover every detail. Here, textile ceases to be just material and becomes territory — a space where the viewer can lose themselves visually and emotionally.

The works feel very physical and intimate; they invite you to touch them, to follow with your eyes each thread that constructs the surface. And that is part of their magic: the balance between the intimate and the primitive, between contemporary technique and an imagery that connects with something ancient and universal.

With these two installations, Gancedo’s showroom becomes, during the festival, something more than an exhibition space — it becomes an experience. A place where textile design is not only observed but also felt and explored. Because sometimes a single thread — quite literally — is enough to open up an entire creative world.
